Thulana Kannangara

Still the same guy hitting keys like he knows what he’s doing, with a few more years of practice at it. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, then seven-odd years of building things that other people depend on. These days I’m a Senior Software Engineer at Zenjob, working on the systems that match people to shifts.

What I’m working on

At Zenjob I work across the stack that connects workers to jobs - Spring Boot and Kotlin on the backend, NestJS and TypeScript in places, React Native and native mobile when the feature lives there, all on AWS and Kubernetes.

  • Rebuilt the offer feed to cut P95 latency by 75% - 2s down to 500ms - for 20,000+ active workers
  • Drove initiatives that pushed platform fulfillment past 90%
  • Learned the mobile stack (Kotlin, React Native) on the job and took on the team’s mobile work

Before that

Sysco Labs - Colombo, Sri Lanka (2019–2022), Software Engineer then Senior.

  • Architected 10+ microservices for an e-commerce platform moving $20M+ daily across 150K+ concurrent users
  • Led a team of 6–8 engineers on backend architecture and CI/CD
  • Cut infrastructure cost 25% through AWS tuning and Kubernetes autoscaling

The platform was Sysco Shop - a marketplace I helped design and build, running at 99.9% uptime.

Things I know reasonably well

Area Tools
Languages Java, Kotlin, Python, TypeScript, JavaScript
Frameworks Spring Boot, NestJS, Node.js, React, React Native, Flask
Data PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch
Cloud & DevOps AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, Docker, Jenkins

Plus the usual jargon - microservices, event-driven design, observability, CI/CD, and a healthy suspicion of anything described as “just a quick change”.

How I tend to work

For what it’s worth, the themes that come back most often in review feedback are ownership - taking something from idea to production and staying accountable for it - and adaptability, moving between backend, mobile and frontend as needed. I get asked to help debug things fairly often.

My own read: I’d rather write a clear one-pager than a clever abstraction, and I’m still learning as much as I’m teaching.
